Is WebMD Making You Sicker? A 27-Year Holistic Doctor Says Yes

You wake up at 2:14 AM. Something feels off in your side.
So what do you do? You grab your phone... open Google or WebMD... type in three vague symptoms... and twenty minutes later, you've convinced yourself it's either pancreatic cancer or a heart attack.
Sound familiar?
If you've ever been there - and let's be honest, most of us have - you already know what Dr. Marissa Heisel walked into my studio to talk about. Because after 27 years as a holistic chiropractor and midwifery-trained practitioner, she's watched women hand over their bodies to a search bar.
And it's making us sicker.

The WebMD Spiral Has a Name - And It's Costing You
There's an actual medical term for what happens when you type a symptom into Google at 2 AM.
It's called cyberchondria.
Cyberchondria is the documented phenomenon where repeated online health searches increase anxiety, worsen symptoms, and drive worse health decisions. It's not a fringe theory. It's been studied. Published. Acknowledged in peer-reviewed journals for over a decade.
And here's the kicker - WebMD, Reddit health forums, mommy bloggers on Instagram, and Facebook health groups are the primary fuel.
So why does nobody in the medical establishment talk about it?
Because the system that profits from your confusion has zero incentive to fix it.
Dr. Marissa has watched this play out in real time for almost three decades. Women come into her practice already pre-diagnosed by a stranger on Reddit. Pre-medicated by a friend in a Facebook group. Pre-terrified by a WebMD symptom checker that flagged every possibility from heartburn to a stroke.
By the time they get to a real practitioner, they're not asking for help. They're asking for permission to believe the worst.
That's not health. That's programming.
How Self-Diagnosing Online Actually Makes You Sicker
Let's get specific. Because "WebMD is bad" is a vibe. Here's the actual mechanism.
1. The anxiety loop. Every symptom search returns a list of possible diagnoses, ranked from common to catastrophic. Your brain locks onto the catastrophic one. Now your stress hormones spike. Stress worsens almost every chronic condition... so the symptom you searched gets WORSE. So you search again. So your anxiety spikes higher. And the loop tightens.
2. The false positive trap. WebMD's symptom checker has been studied for accuracy. The results are not flattering. Most online symptom checkers give the correct top-three diagnosis less than half the time. That's a coin flip with extra steps.
3. The decision paralysis. When you have six possible diagnoses ranked in front of you, you stop trusting any single signal from your body. You stop listening. You override your gut because "the internet said it could be lupus."
4. The expert outsourcing. Every Google search is one more rep training your brain that you're not qualified to assess your own body. Do that for ten years and you've built a learned helplessness so deep you can't even tell if you're hungry without a tracking app.
That last one is the killer. And it's the one Dr. Marissa says is doing the most damage to women.
The 1913 Decision That Set This Whole Thing Up
You can't understand why WebMD wrecks women's health without understanding the system that built modern medicine.
In the early 1900s, American medicine was a wide-open marketplace. Homeopaths, midwives, herbalists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and allopathic doctors all competed for patients. Women had options. Communities had options.
Then came the Flexner Report in 1910 - commissioned by the Carnegie Foundation, then aggressively bankrolled by John D. Rockefeller's General Education Board.
Within a few years, the Flexner-aligned consolidation had:
- Shut down most homeopathic schools
- Closed nearly every Black medical school in the country
- Pushed midwives out of the birthing process
- Centralized medical authority under pharmaceutical-aligned allopathic institutions
Dr. Marissa calls this the moment women's health got hijacked. And the numbers back her up. Pregnancy moved from home to hospital. Childbirth moved from midwives to OBs. Healing moved from food and movement to prescriptions and procedures.
That's the system that built WebMD a hundred years later. Same logic - centralize authority, monetize the dependence, dismiss anything that lives outside the model.
And the women who feel something's "off" in their bodies? They get told to trust the experts... or get gaslit into pharmaceuticals... or get sent to WebMD when the appointment runs short.
Why Women Are Getting Hit Hardest by the Self-Diagnosing Epidemic
Here's the uncomfortable part.
Men spiral on WebMD too. But women take the brunt of this for three specific reasons.
Reason one: Women are taught to question themselves. From puberty through menopause, every major hormonal shift in a woman's body has been pathologized, medicated, or shamed. So when something feels off, the default isn't "let me listen to my body." It's "what's wrong with me?"
Reason two: The mommy blogger industrial complex. Pregnancy, postpartum, infant feeding, kid health - women are inundated with conflicting advice from strangers on Instagram, every single one of them louder and more confident than the last. By the time a new mom has scrolled for an hour, she trusts nobody. Especially herself.
Reason three: Doctors dismiss women. This is documented. Women wait longer for diagnoses, get prescribed more psychiatric medications for physical symptoms, and report being talked over in appointments at significantly higher rates than men. So when the real doctor doesn't listen... WebMD becomes the substitute.
That's the trap. The system created the conditions for the trap. And then sold them WebMD as the solution.
Bingo.
What Dr. Marissa Heisel Recommends Instead
Here's where it gets actionable.
Dr. Marissa's prescription costs zero dollars, requires zero appointments, and works in any season. Ready?
Pick one voice that isn't yours - one fear narrative you've been carrying - one source of conflicting advice - and cut it out.
That's it.
Not "add more supplements." Not "find a better expert." Not "follow my protocol." Just remove one source of noise that's been drowning out your own inner knowing.
Maybe it's the Reddit health forum you check every morning. Maybe it's the mommy blogger who makes you feel like a failure for sleep training. Maybe it's the WebMD bookmark you can't stop hitting. Maybe it's the family member who critiques every food choice you make.
Pick one. Cut it. See what happens in 30 days.
Because here's the truth Dr. Marissa wants every woman to hear...
"You don't heal when you add more things. You heal by removing what's already drowning out your own inner wisdom."
That's the whole episode in one sentence.
"Trust The Experts" Was Always A Spell
I'll be honest. Five years ago I would've rolled my eyes at this conversation.
Then 2020 happened.
Dr. Marissa told me something on the show that stopped me cold. In March of 2020, every chiropractor in Canada received a letter from their licensing body. The instruction? Do not discuss the immune system with your patients.
Read that again. We were in the middle of a respiratory pandemic. And the practitioners who specialize in nervous system function and immune support were being ordered, in writing, to stay silent.
That's not science. That's a spell.
And once you see one spell, you start seeing them everywhere. "Safe and effective." "Trust the experts." "Settled science." "Misinformation." These aren't arguments. They're shutdown phrases designed to stop you from thinking.
The whole reason women hand their bodies to WebMD is the same reason most people complied with everything during 2020. We've been trained for a century that someone with a credential knows our body better than we do.
But the body doesn't lie. The data does. The credentials do. The narrative does.
Your body? Still telling you the truth.
You just stopped listening.
How To Actually Trust Your Body Again (Without Throwing Out Medicine)
I want to be clear about something. This isn't an anti-medicine post.
If you break your leg, go to the ER. If you have a serious infection, get antibiotics. If you have a real medical emergency, modern allopathic medicine is genuinely incredible at acute crisis intervention.
The problem isn't medicine. The problem is outsourcing.
Outsourcing your daily symptoms to WebMD. Outsourcing your pregnancy to a doctor you see for ten minutes a month. Outsourcing your mental health to a five-minute prescription pad. Outsourcing your kids' nutrition to a food pyramid built by lobbyists.
Trusting your body again means rebuilding three things that the system spent a century stripping out:
1. Body literacy. Know what's normal for YOUR body. Track your cycle. Notice your energy patterns. Pay attention to how foods make you feel. This is the foundation. Without it, you're guessing every time.
2. A real practitioner relationship. Not a 7-minute insurance-driven visit. A holistic practitioner, functional medicine doctor, midwife, or naturopath who actually listens. Yes, you usually pay out of pocket. Yes, it's worth it.
3. Community. This is what 2020 made obvious. The people around you matter more than the experts on TV. Plant a garden. Buy from a local farmer. Cook real food. Know your neighbors. Build a network that can hold you up when the centralized systems wobble.
That last point is bigger than it sounds. Because the centralized systems are wobbling right now... and most people have no plan.
Why This Matters Right Now - "Lockdowns 2.0" Is Already In Motion
If you think 2020 was a one-off, you're not paying attention.
The International Energy Agency - the IEA - has been quietly publishing guidance to member governments since 2022 on how to handle "demand-side measures" during energy crises. Translation? Lockdowns by another name.
Work from home mandates. Reduced speed limits. Travel restrictions. Limits on heating and cooling. Restrictions on certain types of air travel.
The IEA's 2026 Energy Crisis Policy Response Tracker is publicly available. You can read it yourself.
This isn't a conspiracy. It's a published playbook.
And here's the connection to Dr. Marissa's whole thesis - the women who can't trust their own bodies in normal times will be the most vulnerable when the centralized systems get squeezed again. They'll be the most anxious. The most compliant. The easiest to manipulate with fear.
The fix isn't more information. It's less.
Less noise. Fewer voices in your head. More trust in the one source the system can't censor.
Your gut.

If anything in this post landed, do yourself a favor and listen to the full conversation.
Dr. Marissa goes deeper than I could capture here. We talk about:
- The exact moment women's health got hijacked (and the historical record proves it)
- Why "safe and effective" is the most successful marketing campaign of the last decade
- The 80/20 rule for public health (and why most people will never wake up)
- What to plant in your garden if you've never grown a thing in your life
- Her final, one-sentence prescription that costs nothing and works for anyone
It's one of the most important conversations I've had on the show this year.

Final Thoughts
The most powerful health intervention you can make this year doesn't cost a dollar.
Cut one voice out. Listen to your body. Rebuild trust with yourself.
That's it.
Dr. Marissa spent 27 years figuring this out. The least we can do is take her at her word and try it for a month.
Your body's been talking to you the whole time.
You just need to put the phone down long enough to hear it.
