Why Natural Cancer Therapies Never Get FDA Approved (A Surgical Oncologist Explains)
It costs about $1 billion to get something through the FDA.
Do that with a new drug and you get a patent so you can earn the money back.
Do that with something natural... and you get nothing. Because the day it's approved, anybody can make it.
So nobody runs the trial.
Not because it failed. Because nobody can afford to find out.
That's the case Dr. Francisco Contreras made on a recent episode of The Brian Nichols Show. He's a surgical oncologist trained at the University of Vienna. He runs Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana - the hospital his father founded in 1963. They say they've treated more than 100,000 patients from over 60 countries.

The $1 Billion Problem (It's Not a Conspiracy)
Contreras doesn't lead with a conspiracy theory. He leads with economics.
To get FDA approval, you have to prove a treatment is safe and effective in human clinical trials. That process, he says, runs about a billion dollars.
If you're a pharmaceutical company with a proprietary molecule, that billion dollars buys you a patent. You get exclusivity. You make the money back.
If you're dealing with a natural compound - high-dose vitamin C, vitamin B17 / laetrile, curcumin, ozone therapy, certain immune approaches - the FDA still wants the billion-dollar proof. But there's no patent waiting on the other side.
"Once you are approved, anybody can make it," Contreras said.
His father lived that lesson in the 1970s. Mexico approved laetrile. The next day, other labs started making it cheaper. The investment never came back.
That's why natural therapies stay stuck in lab studies and animal research. The science may be there. The clinical-trial money isn't - because the business model can't close.
They Don't Reject Chemo. They Use It When It Works.
This is the part that cuts through the "quack clinic" narrative.
Contreras says Oasis of Hope offers chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery alongside alternative therapies. The filter is outcomes, not ideology.
- Lymphomas: chemo can cure roughly 90-95% of patients. They use it.
- Stage-one colon or lung cancer: surgery can be curative. They offer it.
- Where chemo has shown little or no help: they look for alternatives.
High-dose vitamin C, he argues, can kill cancer cells through oxidative stress similar to some chemo and radiation - without the same side-effect profile. Vitamin B17 is described as a mild natural anti-tumor agent. Dendritic-cell immune therapies. Ozone therapy to raise tumor oxygenation so radiation works better. Hyperthermia. Approaches with roots going back to Coley's vaccine in the early 1900s.
And here's the detail that stuck with me: he says a lot of these therapies were developed in American institutions - NCI, Sloan Kettering, Rockefeller University - then became available to patients in Mexico because of the approval economics above.

What's Actually Stopping Doctors?
Brian pushed the obvious question: if the research trail is this long, why are doctors' hands tied?
Contreras's answer wasn't "insurance" first. It was the AMA.
He said about 15-16 years ago, some U.S. insurers were paying for alternative treatments outside the country - including theirs. Then the AMA sued because the treatments weren't FDA approved. Payments stopped. Not because the outcomes failed in those cases, he argues - because they weren't FDA approved.
Cost comparison he floated on the show:
- Average chemo cycle payment he cited: ~$500,000
- A complete cycle of their therapy: ~$40,000
Whether those numbers match every claim system is a separate audit. The incentive structure he describes is clear: FDA approval became the proxy for "safe to recommend," and everything outside that lane got treated as legally radioactive.
Brian compared it to IT: nobody ever gets fired for buying Cisco. Same energy in medicine. Prescribe what's FDA approved and you're protected. Recommend anything else and you're exposed - even if the banana on your desk isn't FDA approved either. (Yes, Contreras actually used the banana line.)
To Families Hitting the Wall
Most patients, Contreras said, don't show up early. They show up after they've been told there's nothing left. After family and doctors call Mexico "crazy." After hospice is the next conversation.
His pitch to families isn't "abandon conventional care." It's make an informed decision.

That doesn't automatically mean every alternative works. It does mean "not FDA approved" is not the same sentence as "proven false."
